[Updated 5/6] The results of the PolarBear are in.
May 3, 2008Note: we will most likely be posting some more race updates....so, please check back.
Which means the start of the 2008 outside Maine triathlon season is now underway.
Derek Treadwell, Doug Welling and Chris Bagg, three guys who occasionally train and ski together, took first, second and fifth at Saturday’s PolarBear Tri/Duathlon.
Treadwell had a winning time of 54:06:29, with Welling taking second in 55:45:72. Chris Bagg, who won the event in last year with a time of 51:40:4, finished in 59:17:45 (even with a flat tire during transition and a 2 minute penalty!).
Catherine Sterling took the women’s overall in 58:56:49 (becoming the first women ever to break one hour in the event!). Angela Bancroft placed second in 1:00:01 and Carrie McCusker third in 1:03:28. Last year’s winner, Erin Brennan (won age group) took fourth in 1:03:50.
Terrific T won the team triathlon division. Team members: Nico Kamino, 14, swim 7:06; Sam Humphries, 14, bike 34:56; and Maxwell Payson, 14, run 20:06. Awesome job guys!
Quentin Reeve won the duathlon with a time of 1:04:21, while Larissa Boddie won the women’s in 1:08:38.
While dreary weather or the threat of something worse kept a lot of athletes away, the field was not only highly competitive, many first-time triathletes took part in the season’s first outside tri.
Some things we noted:
Claire Depke, inspired by Glenn Close’s appearance at last year’s PolarBear, did phenomenally well, finishing in 1:11:31! Glenn Close and her husband David Shaw also participated in this year's event.
The two David Smiths, Ironmen both, also competed on the same playing field, one in the duathlon (1:10:05) and one in the tri (1:09:16).
And the training brotherhood known as Bob Turner (1:04:49), Mike Matheson (1:11:29) and Dave Brackett (1:12:08) were also there.
All three Coles - Jeff, Kim (won age group), and daughter Rachel - her first triathlon, made it one of many family affairs at the race today.
Beryle Martin (in her first tri!), women 45-50, and Jeff Fisher, men 45-50, both won their respective classes.
Ted McCarthy competing in the Men 65 division well above mid-pack with a time of 1:17:18.
Another awesome event management job by Nicole Pisani and Will Thomas (co-Race Directors) of Tri-Maine.
CONGRATS to all that participated!
Note: T1/T2 times are included in the swim and bike times.

Any comments, suggestions, or recommendations.....always looking to improve.
